"PUTINBURG" book
English edition
Dmitry Nikolaevich Zapolsky was a Russian journalist, political analyst, TV presenter, and author. In 2011, fearing persecution, Zapolsky fled Russia. He passed away in 2021 while traveling with his family in Riga. His widow, Elizaveta, did not rule out the possibility of poisoning and said in an interview that Dmitriy first had a heart attack a week before his death. On August 8, 2021, the heart attack was stronger, and it was decided to call an ambulance. Dmitriy passed away a couple of minutes before the medics arrived.

Crime. Corruption. Murder. Betrayal

The 2022 invasion of Ukraine might have caught most of the world by surprise – but not those familiar with President Vladimir Putin’s gangster state and its inner workings. From stealing national resources to implementing a mafia-style hierarchy within the Kremlin, both Putin’s rise and Russia’s downfall can be traced back to a single point of origin: the city of Saint Petersburg.

In Putinburg, acclaimed St. Petersburg journalist Dmitriy Zapolsky gives a hair-raising account of the infamous Russian leader’s rise to power and the impossible, gaudy cast of characters responsible for turning contemporary Russia into a new imperial monster.

With his dynamic and realistic style, Zapolsky paints a riveting portrait of St. Petersburg in the late 90s and early 2000s. Through his intimate knowledge and access to the people closest to the soon-to-be-president, Zapolsky reveals how, over the span of that single decade, Putin and his allies—dubbed “The St. Petersburg guys”—took over Russia’s national resources, implemented a mafiaesque government, suppressed their opposition, and began exerting their influence both domestically and abroad. The result is a chilling insider’s exposé of Russia’s transformation during the Putin regime’s formative years of corruption and violence.

More than a gonzo documentary, more than a thrilling political story—Putinburg is an authoritative, damning document made all the more relevant in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It is a story of true journalism, insight, and a cautionary tale from one of the last brave Russian journalists.

From the Author

The uniqueness of Putinburg is that through the prism of his memoirs, Dmitry Zapolsky managed not only to intrigue the reader with fascinating stories from the lives of gangsters, officials, and businessmen—but also to present an analysis of processes and connections. These are not so much memoirs, but more so the author's personal impressions and portraits of the people who made modern Russia a new imperial monster. Zapolsky's characters sell their conscience, die for the sake of a bundle of dollars, kill each other, and lie in the St. Petersburg soil on which the curse of humanity, infamously known as "Putinism," grows.

Today, when the mafia state of Russia has finally turned into a fascist terrorist state and is waging a monstrous, despicable war against democratic Ukraine, Zapolsky's Putinburg has taken on a new meaning. The book explains what most researchers and analysts in Russia and around the world, for various reasons, have tried to shamefully ignore: that Putin's Russia is a state run by a criminal group with a particular desire to seize and control territories, harbors an obvious disregard for human life, and is headed by a mafia boss protected by a legion of watchdogs. Zapolsky exposes to the world the gangsters of St. Petersburg and how they intertwine with former KGB officers.

This is gonzo literature. We see life through the camera’s video detector, through the indescribable author’s optics, and literally feel what is happening in Russia of the nineties and noughties. Zapolsky’s heroes sell their consciences, kill each other, die for a wad of dollars, and lie down in the damp St. Petersburg soil, where the curse of humanity, infamously known as "Putinism," grows.
